We are still accepting applications for our 2019 scholarship program! With just over one week left until the March 15 deadline, we encourage you to share the eligibility information and application with the Maine students in your life. Scholarships are available to college sophomores or juniors attending a Maine college or university.
Grace W. Pouliot, one of the Foundation's $1,000 award recipients, is a Presidential Scholar and Mitchell Scholar from South Berwick. She is studying Elementary Education, focused on math education, at the University of Maine. Grace serves as a student ambassador for the College of Education and Human Development, is involved with the Honors Student Advisory Board, serves as a peer mentor and tutor to Honors students, and works as a substitute teacher. She also worked as a Project Leader for Servant Heart Research Collaborative, focused on Sierra Leone, where she created a testing platform to assist students working to pass their National Primary School Examination to continue their public education. Grace's application essay was focused on addressing the Maine teacher shortage, especially in mathematics.
Francesca Haines is a Biology major at Bowdoin, and received a $1,000 award in 2018. The Auburn native volunteers with America Reads and Counts as tutor and also works with a cancer charity on campus. In her essay she shared her inspiration to pursue a career in medicine: her parents' individual battles with cancer. “I have made it my mission in life to not only make a difference internationally, but also to focus my mission in life to give back to my Maine community for everything they did for both of my parents during their cancer journeys by participating in cancer research in the near future, raising awareness and fighting until I do not need to fight anymore."
